Maastrich University

Maastricht University (UM), the most international university in the Netherlands, stands out for its innovative approach to learning and international outlook. It has almost 16,000 students and 4,000 staff. Based at its Faculty of Law is the research institute METRO. METRO initiates and stimulates comparative and transboundary legal research and organizes conferences about various legal themes. Moreover, the institute publishes the Maastricht Journal of European and Comparative Law and the Ius Commune Europaeum Book Series. METRO also facilitates the Ius Commune Research School, a cooperation between various Law Faculties in the Netherlands and Belgium, which aims at the realization of a Ius Commune in Europe. METRO’s research themes include environmental law, torts and insurance, criminal enforcement, and Law and Economics.

Niels Philipsen

Niels Philipsen is Associate Professor in Law and Economics and Vice-Director of research institute METRO, located at the Faculty of Law of Maastricht University. He has acted as project manager and researcher in many research projects conducted by METRO for, inter alia, various ministries, European Commission, OECD, insurers, and professional organizations. He publishes and teaches on Law and Economics, competition policy, environmental law, law enforcement and European integration.
